How to Create Low Poly Designs

Low poly art is undeniably intriguing. With hundreds of geometric shapes forming an abstract image, it’s hard to imagine how much effort went into creating such an amazing masterpiece. Well, we’ll let you in on a little secret. Creating low poly designs isn’t as and difficult as it seems. With a little help from Adobe Illustrator or another vector software, you’ll be producing incredible low poly designs effortlessly!

  1. Start with a high-quality image to transform
  2. Download a low poly app such as DMesh, I ♥ ∆, Trigraphy or Polygen. Test them out to see which works best for you.
  3. Using your poly tool of choice, create your polygons. Be sure to reduce the opacity of the polygons so you can reference the original image.
  4. This is where it gets a little tedious. Start tracing the characteristics of your image to form different shapes. Some of the smaller more intricate elements of your photo may require additional vertices to really bring out the details of your photo.
  5. Continue to compare the original photo with your polygons to ensure your design is staying on track.
  6. Once the main focus of your image is traced and looking complete, create and trace some additional vertices around the boarder of your image. This will give your illustration a more polished look.
  7. Once you feel that your masterpiece is finished, export your artwork and save it in SVG format.

There you have it! Now you can create your own low poly designs with ease. Before you jump into creating low poly artwork, here are some things to keep in mind.

  • The more intricate the design is, the more time it will take
  • Tweak your illustration by smoothing out the rough edges of your design. Drawing a square or rectangle helps.
  • Edit your photo beforehand, so your image is bright, sharp and easy to work with.
