How A TikTok Star Quit His Day Job

Clueless Bushcraft

Pursuing your passions and quitting your day job is something many aspire to do. Find out how this Tik-Tok start did it in the article below!

“There’s so many people that want to be a content creator, but they never start.”

Tom aka Clueless Bushcraft is one of the people that actually started. And he’s seen great success since the launch of his channel.

On TikTok, Tom has amassed over 2.6 million followers. And people don’t just tune in for outdoor survival tips – his insatiable personality is a big drawing point.

Now, he’s planning his next big move: Quitting his day job.

Feeling stuck in your day job? Want to pursue content creation or other creative avenues like Tom?

Clueless Bushcraft himself has some golden nuggets of advice for people looking to make that personal and professional change.

Now’s The Time

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: You’ve just got to start.

Whatever it is that you’ve been wanting to do – start a podcast, open a merch shop – now’s the time.

To keep ourselves from pursuing something, we often come up with excuses. For example: “I can’t make videos until I have professional equipment.”

This kind of thinking will only create delays and stall momentum.

“You don’t need to worry about the gear that you have, just work with what you have now,” says Tom.

Tom started his Youtube channel back in 2017 with whatever tools he could find.

He didn’t painstakingly agonize over every detail – he let the videos do the talking.

He admits that it’s cringy looking back on those early videos now seeing how far he’s come. But they were an essential learning experience.

“Commit first and think about the details later.”

That’s one of Tom’s favorite rules from The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone. The book is about accomplishing your business dreams, but it’s an essential lesson in everyday life.

Even if the beginning is rocky, you’ve got to commit to hone your voice.

Tom couldn’t have gotten to where he is now without that awkward early stage on Youtube.

It helped build character and show him who he wanted to be.

Start From Scratch

“I love the idea of building things from scratch,” Tom says.

Tom was inspired to make videos about bushcraft life (surviving in the natural environment) by Minecraft, of all things.

The idea of creating something out of nothing is the essence of Clueless Bushcraft.

He did his own thing. Whether that was trying new recipes, or failing at building a fire in the woods.

But he was having trouble finding an audience.

Tom’s biggest hurdle: obscurity.

His content was getting lost for all kinds of reasons, either the algorithm or the nicheness of it.

So, he set a goal for himself this January: post videos on TikTok three to four times a day.

The only way people can see and engage with your content is if you put it out there.

Users on TikTok quickly became fascinated by the uniqueness of Tom’s content. They started to interact and ask all kinds of questions

How can I survive using just the elements of nature? Does he really live in that shed he films in?

He developed a style and persona that was totally his own. And the numbers grew.

But Tom’s attitude never changed.

Stay Genuine to Sustain Success

Tom hasn’t let fame and followers distract him from his main mission: creating a community.

And maybe that’s part of the reason he’s been so successful.

He doesn’t want Clueless Bushcraft to be just about him. He wants to see his followers and others make it their own.

“I’m just a normal guy learning all these new things and I’m just sharing it with the world – you guys can be Clueless Bushcraft.”

And he means it.

People can tell when someone’s being fake about what they put out into the world. And you never get that feeling from Tom.

Even in his sponsored content for Spreadshop – all the words he says are his own.

When Tom does face obstacles, he views them as something to learn from. They help him prevent mistakes down the road.

The No Complaining Rule by Jon Gordon emphasizes this. How can you use complaining to solve your problems or look at them from a different point of view?

There’s actually a benefit in misdirection.

“If you have a flat tire you just think of it as a learning experience,” says Tom.

Now you know how to change a tire, or what roads to avoid.

It brings all your problems into focus and turns into something you can use to your benefit.

What Comes Next?

Tom’s grateful to have a day job, it’s just not where his passion lies.

“I prefer to be tired doing the stuff that I love,” he says.

That’s the content side of things. Making videos that engage with his followers and build on that sense of community.

Tom was actually inspired to set plans in stone to leave his job after listening to their first episode of our Quit Your Day Job podcast.

We talk about how creators can leverage tools like merch to build on their brand, connect with fans, and generate revenue.

Tom was so inspired by our message that he plans to quit his day job in January 2022 and become a full-time content creator!

He’ll have more time to dedicate to his TikTok (those videos don’t make themselves, after all).

He wants to create more longform content for his Youtube, like this shed build he just uploaded.

These videos will be informative and go into details TikTok won’t allow. And it will get him closer to his goal of 100,000 subscribers.

That silver play button is calling his name!

Tom will also have more time to work on his merch. He actually started as an illustrator and wants to get back into drawing.

Seeing the merch designs in his Spreadshop come to life was really inspirational.

“I’m so grateful for the fact that I have my logo on something, you know. It’s something tangible now.”

He feels confident and more assured of himself now that he has the ability to branch out into these different areas.

Quitting your day job isn’t just a one-time thing – it’s a lifestyle.

And Clueless Bushcraft is all about creating a sustainable lifestyle for survival AND satisfaction.

Spreadshop Merch Brings People Together

Spreadshop Brings People Together

Spreadshop isn’t just a place for you to bring your personal creative ideas to life, it’s also a way for you to connect with others, especially those closest to you: family, friends, members of your community and you can do it all with Spreadshop Merch.

Now that you can safely see all the people you love, it’s time to bask in the summer sun, enjoy good food together, and wear some themed merch.

Make your large or small gatherings feel like an event when you create commemorative merch.

T-shirts are a perfect way to cement a memory and make for great photo-ops that you can always treasure. They work great for family reunions, annual picnics, birthday celebrations, and summer camps.

Making merch is only going to make your summer schedule of events feel more personal and memorable. They will be a memento of a time in your life that you spent having fun with the special people in your life.

Family Reunions

Family Reunions

It’s been a rough year having to spend so much time apart from our extended families: grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins.

These are people you don’t see on a regular basis. If you have an annual family reunion, it’s likely the only opportunity you get to spend time with them all year.

My family has been hosting reunions since the 80s and 2020 was the first year we had to skip a reunion due to COVID.

This is a Sunday in August that has meant a lot to me ever since I was a child – spending time with cousins on the playground, listening to exaggerated family stories, eating decadent Italian food.

I know a lot of families have similar traditions, so why not make this year’s feel extra special by making t-shirts?

Include your family name, a family crest if you have one, and the anniversary year of the reunion.

A family that’s hosting a virtual family reunion this year used Spreadshop to create their own themed merch.

They created a design that features their name and a graphic of them wearing masks. Maybe they wanted to make merch this year to feel like they’re connected because they can’t see each other in person. But this doesn’t just have to be a one-time thing.

Turn it into an annual tradition. Allow different family members to come up with designs and colors each year so everyone feels like they’re involved.

You’ll soon carve out an area of your closet for family themed merch. It’s an unlikely fandom, sure, but one you should be proud to represent.

Picnics and Barbecues

Picnics and Barbecues

It wouldn’t feel like summer without the savory smells of grilled food and the occasional swatting of hungry flies.

Whether it’s for a holiday like the Fourth of July or part of a weekend retreat, having a good old-fashioned picnic/barbecue is the perfect excuse to get all your friends and family together to eat the perfect buffet of summer treats.

The Newton County, Mississippi Picnic is a great example of this.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the picnic started in 1971 as a way for African Americans from Newton County to reconnect in Detroit, Michigan.

They’re using Spreadshop to celebrate this milestone by creating a wide range of merch with different design options.

This t-shirt highlights all the different states people are travelling from to honor their Newton County roots with the annual picnic.

They play up the event with another t-shirt that brings a more creative and vibrant side to the event using a handmade drawing.

They also have the designs available as hoodies, mugs, masks, and stickers. Because people are into different kinds of merch, it’s nice to provide some options.

If someone’s a coffee drinker, our mugs are a staple. And you can never go wrong with stickers to put on laptops, notebooks, or water bottles.

These former Newton County residents are unlocking their creativity and history to create an event that reminds them of their home city, but also one that celebrates their lives today.

Birthdays

Birthdays

You may not be as into your special day as others, but your birthday is a great excuse for friends and family to celebrate you whatever way they see fit.

They might take goofy photos of you and turn them into meme-worthy designs that play off how old you’re turning that year. Or create merch that revolves around the activity you’re all doing for your party that year: bowling, ice skating, paintball.

Birthday merch works for people of all ages, too, with shirts and other merch a perfect addition to kid parties.

Make a shirt specifically for the birthday boy/girl and even create personalized tees for other kids at the party. Incorporate it with the theme of the party to make it even more fun by adding specific design elements to your Spreadshop merch.

If it’s a Disney princess party, use tiaras and castles and even have different colors coordinated to represent different princesses.

If it’s cowboy themed, throw some cowboy hats, sheriff badges, and rodeo elements in there.

You can even create little party favors. Make birthday themed stickers or pins that are based around the party and add a special touch with name personalization.

These would be perfect additions to goody bags.

Your parties will feel so much more unique and interactive when you incorporate merch into them. These items will bring up the same feelings that school-related t-shirts do – a rush of nostalgia.

You’ll always be reminded of the friends you had at that time and all the special memories you were able to create at so and so’s birthday party.

Sports Leagues & Camps

Sports Leagues & Camps

Make your sports games feel like team events, no matter how scrappy or small they are.

Team shirts are necessary for any outdoor recreational activities. How else are you going to know which team is which?

And they work for practically any sport.

Soccer and football teams are the standard, but think outside the box. Something like ultimate frisbee, for example.

It’s a low-contact sport, but things can still get intense out there and you and your team will look as intimidating as possible thanks to your rad merch. The other team might even get intimidated when they see how seriously you’re taking the game.

Volleyball and badminton are summertime classics. Make team shirts and bags to hold your gear, like merch water bottles to help quench your thirst during breaks.

People are taking the concept of organized sports to a whole other level these days. Ever heard of drone racing leagues?

Come up with a fun name for your team and wear your Spreadshop merch to tournaments you’re participating in. It can even become a competition amongst teams to see who has the coolest merch come the next event.

Even esports (competitive video game competitions) would qualify. There’s bound to be some happening in your area this summer, whether they’re virtual or in-person, and they make for fun, friendly competition.

Teams come in all shapes and sizes now; you don’t have to be tearing it up on the field to be a part of one.

Find your tribe and rep your colors with pride this summer. It will help boost morale and revive your love for the game all over again.

Summer Camps

Summer Camps

I used to go to the local playground for summer camp every year when I was in elementary school. It was a great way to make friends that went to different schools and reconnect with them each summer.

Those teen counselors were mentors to me at such a young age, and all the activities we did as a group – kickball, crafts, relay competitions – brought so much joy to me then and now when I reflect on those glorious 3 months under the sun.

At the end of every summer, every kid got a commemorative shirt (and we might’ve even tye dyed a few here and there).

We’d always wear them on the last day and get photographs taken. You’d see kids wearing last year’s t-shirts the next summer just to keep the memories alive.

Those experiences are so important and formative to young people, and providing merch like t-shirts is going to mean so much to them years down the line.

You feel like you’re a part of a national sports team when you’re at summer camp. You’re such a collective unit.

T-shirts are going to give kids street cred, more like playground cred, wherever they are. They’ll feel united and ready to rise up to whatever challenges they’re faced with (even if it’s just the monkey bars).

There’s all kinds of summer activities that can be made better by including commemorative t-shirts and other merch.

People will feel like they’re part of a group or a team when they wear it. They’ll feel more confident, and they’ll be able to express themselves in a different way – together.

Musicians That Use Spreadshop

Musicians That Use Spreadshopfor Their Merch

It’s been a hot minute since we were last at a concert, and boy, is live music making a comeback and with it their band merch.

With new summer and fall tours announced nearly every day, it’s time to get back to some shows and rock some band merch in support.

Spreadshop is the merch destination for independent musicians around the globe that work in all kinds of genres – from goth rock to country to heavy metal.

It’s another way for artists to connect with their fans and makes for a better music listening experience. The hardcore ones buy that t-shirt and that hoodie and wear it with pride – in their bedroom, or at a show – but the passion for the music remains the same.

This summer, support independent artists and look like a rock star while doing it. And even discover some great new bands in the process.

The Nosferatu

The Nosferatu

Hailing from the United Kingdom, The Nosferatu are a second-wave goth rock band with looks and licks to boot.

Their melodic and intense soundscapes are only heightened by their dark and dramatic looks of precisely gelled hair, colored contact lenses, and layered velvet attire.

The Nosferatu have been making music since the early 90s and still continue to record albums and tour for their fans – even if the lineup has changed along the way.

They’ve got plenty of style, I mean just look at them. And that carries heavily into their music and their overall stage presence.

The Nosferatu have managed to carve out a special niche in the world of heavy metal and goth rock. They have the talents and style of great showmen like Alice Cooper with the music to back it up.

They’re set to back their live comeback on Dec. 3 in London. But if you are miles or oceans away from London town, check out their catalogue on Spotify and their super cool goth themed Spreadshop.

Their band merch range from a distinct crest-looking logo, and other goth themed designs like tombstone iconography, and an even creepier and cooler image of the original Nosferatu himself.

If you’re trying to get out of your musical comfort zone, The Nosferatu are a great place to start considering their genre of music and ultra-specific interests that consist of vampires and the afterlife, among other things.

The Pocket Queen

The Pocket Queen

Taylor Gordon aka The Pocket Queen is a force to be reckoned with.

Gordon has been drumming for years – as early as two-years-old – and has worked with the likes of Beyonce, Fifth Harmony, and Daya not to name drop.

She’s dedicated to her craft and consistently posts drumming lessons and covers on Youtube engaging with fans and the drumming community she’s a leader in. And Gordon is finally stepping into the spotlight herself.

She released her debut single entitled “WE CAME TO MOVE” featuring Ryck Jane in late March. And there’s no way you can’t get down to this slinky, funky number. As The Pocket Queen, Gordon unleashes an alter ego rivaling Sasha Fierce cool.

Her Spreadshop is more understated with band merch that reference card icons like hearts and spades, while she remains the Queen. Queen P that is.

James Scott Bullard

James Scott Bullard

James Scott Bullard is an award-winning recording artist/singer-songwriter known for his potent blend of southern rock, with some gospel and blues elements thrown in.

He’s fixed himself a comfortable spot somewhere between the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Waylon Jennings (and even bears quite the resemblance to the latter).

Bullard has won the acclaimed Gram Parsons Legacy award among other honors for music and songwriting. His trademark style falls in line with singing about americana themes and what one would call “outlaw-worthy” experiences.

His voice has the worn-in feel of leather and provides an added resonance when he sings about his experiences dealing with love, loss, death, and addiction.

Bullard’s most recent album may be a few years old at this point – 2018’s Full Tilt Boogie – but he’s active on his socials and is doing some cool stuff in the country rock merch game.

His Spreadshop is full of different band merch and images that either bear his likeness in all of its heavy metal glory, or are callbacks to different southern traditions or pastimes like faith and cars.

His music is unapologetic and straight to the point, just like his Spreadshop merch.

Plasmingo

Plasmingo

Plasmingo took a bedroom dream into the real world and started recording music from their rooms when they were just teenagers. They now have six albums under their belt and a lifetime of experience to use in their music.

From Sweden, Plasmingo has managed to churn out a number of sonically distinct and different records. They didn’t commit any of their music to recordings – only putting their demos on cassettes – until as late as 2014. But Plasmingo are proof it’s never too late to follow your dreams.

The six albums they have out are wide spanning in genre and tone. One is an ode to 80s flavored power pop, one a heavy metal groove fest, another a charged up disco dance album called Disco Balls, of course.

Plasmingo admits that they’re a bit obscure and aren’t on peoples’ radar, but that hasn’t diminished their passion when it comes to their music or their merch.

Their Spreadshop features band merch used as album artwork and is equal parts flashy and original. Their trademark band design of a flamingo is also interpreted in different ways: rocking a punk rock mohawk, trapped inside a disco ball, losing himself in the dance groove.

Give their music a listen and support the people who are still chasing their dreams and putting out some pretty rad stuff while doing it.

Drew Angus

Drew Angus

Best known for being a finalist on Season 15 of American Idol, Drew Angus has an indelible charm that carries through everything he does.

His pop/soft rock tones aren’t far from the likes of Shawn Mendes or Ed Sheeran, and his heartfelt lyrics are made all the more resonant thanks to his uplifting and catchy melodies.

Angus’s Youtube channel houses a slew of covers – “Wrecking Ball,” “The Joker,” “Thinking Out Loud” – and original material, like his most recent single, “Made to Love You.”

The new song is delicate and captures the blissful feeling of romance thanks to a gorgeous choreographed music video.

Beyond the American Idol stage, Angus has shared the stage with musical heavyweights like Andrea Bocelli and Niles Rodgers and is eyeing a return to the road with a couple of early November Pennsylvania tour dates as of now.

As far as his Spreadshop, Angus favors a stripped down approach, just like his music. Find a simple yet stylized “Drew Angus” shirt and plenty of merch for his new single, “Made to Love You.”

He’s got the voice, the talents, and the charm. And his music suggests he’s just beginning an exciting journey as far as recording and playing live shows for dedicated fans along the way.

The Low Kings

The Low Kings

Ever been curious to know what Irish and Scottish pub music sounded like rolled up into one fun-filled, crazy sound? Then The Low Kings have got you covered.

The band have delightfully branded themselves as “the sound of whiskey” due to their deep pub roots and a touring cycle that consists of pubs around the city of Pittsburgh where they are based.

The Low Kings’ celtic brand of rock is designed to be played loud with plenty of beers and dancing in the mix. You’re compelled to engage with their music in one way or another.

If you can’t make it to the Steel City to catch one of their shows, listening to their music on its own packs quite the punch. Find high spirited celtic jams like “Irish Stand Down” and even covers like “Rusty Cage” with a country celtic twist all on their Spotify.

Their Spreadshop band merch features their stand out design of celtic themed crest logo on t-shirts, hoodies, and more. The Low King make merch fit for knocking back a pint at the pub and going for a spin on the dance floor, or when you’re just chilling at home, eating ice cream from the comfort of your couch.

Gloom Wagon

Gloom Wagon

Gloom Wagon is a band that’s getting ready to dominate alternative rock radio stations and playlists this summer.

The doom themed grunge band’s first ever single came out May 21 and is a strong entry for a new band entering the scene. The song – “Haze” – is mastered by longtime grunge veteran Jack Endino who worked with Seattle bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney on seminal albums.

Gloom Wagon aren’t far from Seattle as they’re based in Alaska and easily capture the intensity and grittiness of north western mountain rock. There’s something about that atmosphere that just unleashes the dirtiest grooves.

Their Spreadshop as of now is dedicated to promoting their new single and getting their name out there.

The artwork for “Haze” is trippy yet cartoony, like Scooby Doo meets Black Sabbath.

Even though they don’t have much music out, they’re already working on building their brand and promoting themselves. It’s just another way to help their music be heard and their band merch worn by as many fans as possible.
